Who we are
The Bristol Bonsai Society has been bringing people together around a shared love of bonsai for over 50 years. What started as a small group of enthusiasts has grown into one of the South West’s most active and welcoming bonsai communities. It is a place where complete beginners sit alongside experienced members, and everyone leaves knowing a little more than when they arrived.
We are proud of the breadth of our membership. Our ranks include professionals working in the bonsai industry and individuals whose trees have won recognition at the national level. But equally, we have members who are just starting, people who came to a single meeting out of curiosity and never left. That mix is not accidental; it is what makes the society work. In bonsai, there is always something new to learn and always someone willing to share what they know.
What we do
We meet monthly, and no two meetings are quite the same. Each gathering combines the practical and the theoretical, including hands-on work with trees alongside talks, demonstrations, and discussion. Topics range from species-specific care and seasonal technique to the deeper history and philosophy of the art form.
What you will always find at a Bristol Bonsai Society meeting is an atmosphere of genuine openness. Opinions are shared, questions are welcomed, and the knowledge in the room, which has been accumulated over decades of growing, is freely given. Whether you bring a tree to work on or simply come to watch and listen, you will leave with something useful.
Our meetings are always enjoyable. Bonsai people tend to be curious, patient, and quietly passionate, which makes for good company by any measure.
Our members and their trees
The collective diversity of our members’ collections reflects the breadth of bonsai itself. You will find native British species, including hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, yew and hornbeam, all grown from collected material or developed over decades from nursery stock. Alongside these sit imported Japanese maples, junipers, pines, and elms, as well as more unusual species that reflect individual members’ particular interests and obsessions.
Some trees in our members’ collections are the result of 20 or 30 years of patient development. Others are young trees at the beginning of their journey. All of them represent the central practice of bonsai: the long, rewarding conversation between a grower and a tree.
Our place in the wider bonsai world
Bristol Bonsai Society members participate in shows and exhibitions at local, regional, and national levels, and our members have contributed to the wider bonsai community through writing, teaching, and demonstration. We maintain links with other clubs and organisations across the UK, and we welcome visiting demonstrators and teachers whose work broadens our collective knowledge.
